School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering traces its origins to the Chemistry Division established in 1977. It was renamed the Department of Chemistry in 1990, the School of Chemistry and Applied Chemistry in 2006, the School of Chemical Engineering in 2010, and adopted its current name in 2018. The School currently offers four undergraduate programs: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and New Energy Materials and Devices, as well as a Master's program in Subject Education (Chemistry). It has over 1,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 30 postgraduate students.

Adhering to the fundamental task of fostering virtue and nurturing talents, the School's Party Committee aligns with the university's Passing the Torch, Shaping Souls, and Educating People Party-building 1+6 brand matrix. It implements the faculty Party-building philosophy of Red Candle Casting Souls, Cultivating with Virtue and the student Party-building philosophy of Nurturing Foundations with the Torch, Facilitating Growth, constructing a 1+3+6 grassroots Party-building working mechanism to deeply integrate Party-building with the School's development. The School's Party Committee comprises five grassroots Party branches (two for faculty and staff, three for students). Numerous faculty members have received provincial and municipal honors such as Hubei Female Scientific and Technological Innovation Talent and Outstanding Communist Party Member of the Huanggang Education System.

The School boasts a well-structured faculty with outstanding capabilities in scientific research and teaching. It currently has 69 staff members, including 58 full-time teachers, among whom are 11 professors and 26 associate professors. All 58 full-time teachers hold doctoral degrees. The faculty includes 11 recipients of provincial-level high-level talent programs, such as the Hubei 100 Talents Plan, Chutian Scholar, and the Hubei Outstanding Youth Fund Project. Additionally, eight provincial-level high-level talents are appointed as adjunct faculty. Since 2021, six individuals have been listed among the World's Top 2% Scientists. In recent years, three faculty members have served as government science and technology deputies, three as government industrial development commissioners, and ten as science and technology vice presidents in related enterprises.

The School places high importance on undergraduate teaching and program development. The Chemistry program is a Hubei Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program and has passed the Ministry of Education's Tier 2 Certification for Teacher Education Programs. The Pharmaceutical Engineering and Chemical Engineering and Technology programs are selected for the Hubei Provincial Strategic Emerging (Pillar) Industry Talent Training Plan. Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Pharmaceutical Engineering are disciplines designated for Chutian Scholar positions in Hubei Province. The School has co-established the Modern Industrial College of Ecological Chemical Engineering with the Huanggang Chemical Industry Park. The Chemistry Teaching and Research Office has been approved as a Hubei Provincial Excellent Grassroots Teaching Organization. Analytical Chemistry is a National First-Class Undergraduate Course; Inorganic Chemistry is a Provincial-Level Quality Course and Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Course; Organic Chemistry, Dual Carbon Chemistry, and GMP Virtual Simulation Training for Pharmaceutical Preparations are Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Courses. In recent years, the School has undertaken over 20 provincial and municipal teaching research projects, published more than 50 teaching research papers in journals such as the Journal of Chemical Education, and published 5 textbooks and 2 monographs.

The School possesses high-level and extensive teaching and research platforms. It hosts seven provincial-level platforms, including the Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Catalytic Material Preparation and Application, the Hubei Provincial Engineering Research Center for High-Purity Raw Material Processing Technology for Electronic Materials, the Base for Introducing Talents in Solid-State Batteries and Catalytic Materials Innovation Demonstration, and the Hubei Provincial Chemistry Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center. It also has four Hubei Provincial Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Science and Technology Innovation Teams in areas such as Functional Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion, and Functionalization of Carbon-Based Materials and Their Energy Storage Applications. The School offers excellent research conditions, with a 7,600-square-meter independent laboratory building equipped with large-scale instruments including Transmission Electron Microscopes, Scanning Electron Microscopes, and Single Crystal X-ray Diffractometers, with a total value exceeding 40 million RMB, covering material preparation, structural analysis, performance testing, and other fields, providing strong support for scientific research. In recent years, the School has undertaken 13 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, over 40 provincial-level research projects including Hubei Provincial Natural Science Foundation Major Special Projects and Key Projects, and over 120 horizontal projects, with cumulative research funding exceeding 50 million RMB. The School has received 2 Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Second Prizes, 2 Third Prizes, and 1 Silver Award in the Hubei High-Value Patent Competition. Faculty members have published over 500 research papers, more than 300 of which are SCI-indexed.

Focusing on the strategic needs of Hubei Province and scientific frontiers, the School is committed to serving local economic construction and industrial development in Hubei, leveraging Huanggang's industrial characteristics and advantages. It strengthens basic research, persists in technological development, and promotes the commercialization of research achievement. In recent years, it has been granted over 80 national invention patents and over 90 utility model patents. The School has established deep and comprehensive collaborations with numerous enterprises, including Hubei Xiangyun (Group) Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., CSIC 712 Research Institute, Huanggang Meifeng Chemical Technology Co., Ltd., and Huanggang Renfu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., in technological innovation, achievement transformation, and talent cultivation, facilitating the translation of scientific research achievement into practical applications.

The School adheres to a student-centered approach, focusing on the cultivation of applied talents, and maintains excellent academic atmosphere. The average postgraduate entrance examination admission rate for graduates has exceeded 30% for many consecutive years. Three students, Wang Ligang, Liu Le, and Zhu Xinjie, were successively admitted as postgraduate students to Peking University. The employment rate has remained stable above 95% over the past five years. One student was awarded the National Outstanding Communist Youth League Member and the Outstanding Award for Grassroots Employment of College Graduates, and one student was recognized as a provincial Yangtze River Scholar. The School actively promotes scientific and technological innovation activities for students, continuously enhancing their comprehensive quality. In the past three years, students have won more than 20 national awards and over 50 provincial awards in competitions such as the China International College Students' Innovation Competition, the Challenge Cup series of scientific and technological works competitions, the National Tianjiabing Cup Teaching Skills Competition, the National University Chemical Design Competition, the National University Chemical Experiment Competition, and the National University Chemical Experiment Innovation Design Competition. Furthermore, in the past three years, students have published over 40 SCI papers as first authors in authoritative journals like Chemical Engineering Journal and Inorganic Chemistry and have been granted over 40 patents.

For over 40 years, the School has remained committed to its educational mission, having cultivated and sent over 7,000 graduates nationwide. More than 50% serve in basic education (including 20 Special-Grade and Senior High School Chemistry Teachers), and nearly 200 hold positions in universities such as Sun Yat-sen University and Wuhan University. The School has become a base for training chemistry teachers in Eastern Hubei, a source of postgraduate students for Double First-Class universities, and a cradle for applied technical talents in chemical engineering, chemical technology, and pharmaceutical engineering. Looking ahead, upholding the university motto Virtue, Erudition, Action, Aspiration, the School will continue to be guided by discipline development, strengthen faculty and platform construction, enhance the quality of talent cultivation and scientific research levels, and strive to become a distinctive, regionally leading school with significant influence domestically.
